Our Story
A Hidden Gem Worth Finding
Planting an Idea
In 1972 Jonathan and Phoebe Wheeler and their young family left the city for a rural idyll in County Wicklow, where they nurtured an organic market garden and reared organic beef and lamb.
In 1984 they bought a 50 acre farm in Ballinanty, where Jonathan decided to diversify. His son Will started collecting antique bottles and traditional farming implements and with help of his Dad, collected so much that they had enough for a museum at the farm. Jonathan thought that a hedge maze might be a nice attraction too and – in 1988 – the maze was planted.
Nature and Tradition
Jonathan and Will not only planted a maze, but they built traditional tea rooms and a large farm barn museum too. They planted trees, created nature walks and wildlife havens. By 1996, Greenan Maze was opened to the public for the first time. In 2018 Jonathan passed away, but Will and his wife Anita carry on his wonderful legacy.
In 2021 the hedge maze needed to be replanted so Will and Anita took the opportunity to use locally grown native beech trees, which encourage biodiversity. Their children helped, just as Will had with his Dad years before. We think Jonathan would approve of the wonderful new maze, keeping his spirit of dedication to tradition and nature, alive.

“The perfect family day out! We love it here… the maze, the woodland trails with information, fairy doors & little houses. The happy animals are always fun to see, there are house & farm museums too. Back to the playground then to get some paninis and delicious coffee. Time slows down perfectly”

Thank you to Anita, Will and all the team for making our school tour so enjoyable to Greenan. The pupils absolutely loved their visit and all the exciting activities that were organised for them. They loved the nature walk, wheelbarrow races, feeding the farm animals and seeing all the old artefacts in the museum. A highlight was definitely the maze!! The tour guides were brilliant with the children and made it such a fun day for us. We can’t wait to return again this year for another wonderful tour!!

“We went on our school tour to Greenan Maze – we had a brilliant time! The children had so much freedom and at the same time learned a lot about the history of farming. The mazes and games with the wheelbarrows were a big hit. The staff super with our boys, really patient and great fun. I would highly recommend this for a school tour – THANK YOU for a great day out!”
“Greenan Farm Museums & Maze has been my go-to location for school tours for the past 2 decades! I’ve brought 1st, 2nd and 3rd class groups here and they’ve all loved the venue! The booking process is hassle-free, reasonably cost effective for parents and the children have been thoroughly entertained by the many activities organised for them. There is plenty to do in all weather. The staff engage well with the children and we always have a great day!”
“Adored this place, nestled amongst stunning mature trees and rolling streams, strolling in wildness, delightful encounters in nature around every corner. The hut is comfortable, interesting museums and lovely little coffee shop. Many thanks to Anita & Will for your obvious commitment and hard work to champion biodiversity. We will be back!!”
“My second time staying here! It was really enjoyable and I nice get away out of Dublin for a night. The sauna and lake were lovely, I would definitely recommend for a wholesome getaway”

“A very unique experience done in a very good way, if we had known exactly how cool it was going to be (our own open fire, sauna sessions available, a beautiful stream and endless woodlands and farm to explore, etc) we definitely would have stayed longer! Blissful isolation without any of the hassle basically! And the owners are very sound people with a very warm vision of what they want the place to be. Highly recommend”
